NGINX's Igor Sysoev Wins 2012 Cloud Award for Developer of the Year
San Francisco, CA and Moscow, Russia - January 11, 2012
Final Winners Announced in International Cloud Computing Awards
Today, open source web developer NGINX announced that Igor Sysoev, co-founder and author of its widely used edge web server, has been named Developer of the Year for the inaugural 2012 Cloud Awards. The Developer of the Year award recognizes recipients for their technical expertise, innovative problem-solving and entrepreneurial skill. Sysoev's selection as a Cloud Awards winner underscores the level of recognition and appreciation NGINX has achieved in the marketplace as the next-generation web server. The complete list of Cloud Award winners can be viewed at http://www.cloud-awards.com/2012-shortlist.
"Almost 200 organizations entered the program, which is among the first of its kind," said Cloud Awards organizer Larry Johnson. "We were swamped by entries, and the standard was remarkably high. Judging the submissions was a challenging task. Igor is among the best of the best in the field."
NGINX was launched in 2004 by Sysoev to provide a modern platform to serve the needs of fast growing Internet-based businesses. NGINX is now the second most popular web server worldwide for active sites, according to the latest Netcraft survey. It is used by 9.63% of all web sites and over 20% of the 1,000 busiest web sites on the Internet, including Facebook, Zappos, Groupon, LivingSocial, Hulu, TechCrunch, Dropbox and WordPress.
NGINX's unique ability to deliver tenfold performance increase on existing hardware, while serving many thousands of concurrent users per server, combined with its lean architecture, efficient set of features, scalability and security, have made it the fastest and the only growing web server in the world. With the ever-increasing number of NGINX installations there's in fact a new trend in place towards a better architected web infrastructure- the one based on the true separation of applications and the web server, with the concurrency, compression, request routing and caching offloaded to the dedicated and capable software.
The annual Cloud Computing Awards program, open internationally across the U.S. and EMEA regions, recognizes and celebrates industry leaders and pioneers in the field of cloud computing. In addition to Developer of the Year, categories include B2B Customer Strategy, Best Cloud Infrastructure, Data Innovation of the Year, Most Promising Start-Up, Best Platform as a Service, Security Innovation, Best Software as a Service and Web Services Excellence. The Cloud Awards will re-open this fall with a fresh program seeking upcoming players in the field of cloud computing for 2013.
Igor Sysoev noted, "I am delighted to have won this award on behalf of NGINX, particularly against this calibre of competition. This recognition would not have been possible without the support and contribution of our user and developer community. In the next few months, we will be releasing new features to our open source web server that we hope will further strengthen its status as the leading product in its field."

From its earliest inception, NGINX has been driven by an understanding that Internet usage would explode with an increasing expectation of instant response from online services. NGINX was designed to enable companies to adjust to this new reality of heavy Internet consumption without incurring unnecessary costs in capital investments or time. In almost 10 years of its history, NGINX has developed into a flexible and scalable Internet software, which includes a high performance web server for static and dynamic content, Layer 7 load balancing, reverse proxy for HTTP, SMTP, IMAP and POP3, caching engine and SSL offloading. NGINX has grown organically over the past 10 years of development thanks to the vision of Igor Sysoev and the enthusiasm and support of a loyal community of users and developers. NGINX is faster than its main competitors when it comes to make use of new technologies, such as IPv6 or SPDY. Only Google Servers do better here, but those servers are only run by Google itself and not by thousands of individual webmasters, which makes a big difference.
